Working students and young workers
“I’m 17, and I’ve been working for the past year. My first job was voluntary as I needed work experience to get a job in the first place. I’ve been paid £3.79 an hour, then to £4.35, and now I’m paid the national living wage.
A lot of students have no choice about working. Employers need to be more flexible and be open to discussion regarding students. I’ve had to work till 12pm while I’ve had to get up for an A-Level exam at 8am the following morning. Things like paid study leave would be great. Since leaving school I haven’t had a weekend or 48 hours to myself to relax, as I’ve either been studying or at work. Focus need to be put on areas like this, as young people are going to break.”
